It means you get to sign your second contract, which doesn't have the monetary constraints of an ELC, a year earlier than you would have otherwise. In the case of a superstar player, that can mean millions of dollars coming to you at age 22 rather than at age 23. If I was a potential superstar, I would care. Also, would anyone here know if burning that first year makes you waiver eligible earlier?
