Brett Kulak, who signed a contract with the Flames, but it is not in effect until the 2014-15 season, signed a PTO with the Heat and can play on their roster.

Johnny could sign an ATO with Abbotsford and play for the Heat. If Johnny signs an NHL contract which comes into effect during the 2013-14 season, then he could not play for the Heat. As he has to date not signed an NHL contract, the scenerio of him signing an ATO and playing for the Heat is perfectly fine and probably the Flames preferred way of getting him playing time in the system at this point in the season. Any contract he would sign with the Flames would be going into effect in 2014-15 anyway as the season ends on Saturday and he's currently still playing in the NCAA and on an active roster.

I do believe though if he signs a ATO/PTO with the Heat, he would be effectively ending his NCAA career. He could not play in the playoffs for the Heat and then return to college.
Flames season ends on Sunday and I suspect they'll dangle the chance to play that game to both Gaudreau and Arnold. I wouldn't expect to see Gaudreau with the Heat (this year at least)
