People who truly hate themselves often feel in their hearts that the people around them would be better off without them in the long run. Often for someone with terrible guilt issues about always hurting the ones they love, they feel that it's like ripping off a band-aid.
It's why one of the warning signs for someone who is suicidal is that they hide from the people who care about them, but that only works for so long until they realize that that also hurts them.
I don't think he was a hero or an idol... just an interesting and talented artist with some serious personality and emotional issues.
