First, as someone who has lost more weight than Thor, in the words of Shania Twain, "That don't impress me much". What DOES impress me is how he did it so publicly. I'm willing to stand up as an example AFTER I lost the weight. Thor was willing to stand up, be vulnerable, put himself out there and be an inspiration from the get go. It's one thing to brag after you accomplish a difficult goal. It's quite another to stand up and publicly say you are going to accomplish that goal and show the growing (or in this case, shrinking) progress towards that goal. If I had failed, I would have failed in obscurity. But I don't think Thor had much fear of failure... right from the outset he seemed full of confidence, or at least had very strong commitment and conviction that he was going to put his all into it.

FYI - I lied. As someone who has been there, done that.... I know how tough it was and it always does impress me. Every time. I'm just MORE impressed with how he did it and what his plans for the future are.
