It's actually not surprising that the Leaves suck because they are built the wrong way.
You don't build around one-dimensional wingers and defensively poor defensemen. They have it backwards. When Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf are the two cornerstones of your franchise you're in trouble. Throw in one dimensional guys like Lupul, Kadri and Franson and it's easy to see why Toronto appears to be less than the sum of their parts (just like Calgary 2007-2012).
They're lucky to have a decent goalie in Bernier now but the team in front of him is built all wrong.
It's no wonder Carlyle is having no success. Remember this is a guy who won a Cup in 2007 with a pretty defensive team but he at least had players who were capable of playing without the puck (plus Niedermayer and Pronger on the back end).
