That was the reason the league gave, but considering:
- the contract was signed for more than a year
- all contracts are inspected by the league when they are first registered and nobody batted an eye
- when the league forfeits a pick they usually forfeit the teams own pick, not a pick they acquired otherwise
it is pretty much believed that the league was looking for a reason to make Toronto give up that pick, because they couldn't find standing to block the trade otherwise.
