I actually liked the finale but hated the ending.
I would have had the mother dying around the time Ted's telling the story. She's on her death bed or just passed.
The final scene is the gang at MacLaren's having the drink they were having with that horrid "do you know what happened in this bar? Lots of stuff" line. But have them all recommit to each other, that they meet at their booth once a month, or on the anniversary of Ted's wedding or some milestone.
Ted and Robin ending up together is horrible. The show was about Ted searching for true love, which he found with Tracy (evidence by them giving Travy all Ted's lines in the flash forwards). Ted couldn't do it alone, so he had his friends. His friends are his family. Really that's what the show was truly about friends becoming family. Yes they grow apart, and change but your family is still always there. Having Ted end up with Robin just misses the point.
As for Barney just changing back. His heart was destroyed, he said so himself. He reverted back to not caring anymore because of Robin. I totally buy that.
If my wife left me in a similar circumstance I'd be dead inside too, revert back to a comfort zone and lose empathy.
It was a sad ending, but appropriate (until Ted runs off with Robin).
