Barney has been evolving from a horrible womanizer with no ability to care for another being into someone finally capable of emotional attachment and commitment for several seasons. Then at the drop of a hat, he revers back to Season 1 Barney, only to be transformed back into a decent human being again thanks to the magic of baby.

Basically if the show had lasted about 3 seasons, this ending would've been perfect. Too much has changed since 2005 for this ending to work.
