It absolutely matters because there's more to professional hockey than just the NHL.
Gaudreau could probably come in next season and put up over a point per game in the AHL (I have little doubt of this). He has the highest NHLE of any prospect in the world right now. If he doesn't make it in the NHL due to his size, he can still have a nice long career in the AHL where he can make 6 figures annually and be among the top scorers in the league.
Will he ever break 5 figures with a communications degree?
The education argument just doesn't make sense to me, which leads me to believe there is another reason for the delay.
