i just turned 41
in my early years i was in southern ontario. even back then the leafs sucked so i cheered for the habs. in 1986 (i was 13) we moved to bc.... and i got to meet canuck 'fans' for the first time. they are the same today as they were in the mid-80s.... clueless about their team/prospects/hockey in general/etc.
i took a lot of grief for being a habs fan and constantly got, 'you live in western canada now so you should cheer for a western canadian team!' i decided that these stupid canuck fans did in fact have a point, and i should support a western canadian team.... i was now a flames fan!!
the very first flames game i got to go to: 1989, stanley cup final, game 2. flames lost but it still was amazing. my dad knew a guy in calgary that was able to get him 2 seats in the nose bleeds so off we went. i had my hair all painted up - yellow on the sides with red flaming c's and then red on top
**side note.... if you ever use those hair spray paints, make sure you put a ton of regular hairspray in your hair first, then later the stuff washes right out. if you use that same hair spray paint for grad kidnapping and spray a girl's hair red and yellow, she might spend five or six hours washing her hair trying to get it out, and then come to school the next day still extremely pi$$ed off with red and yellow hair... oops!
so yea - hair all painted up at the dome. then my dad's buddy came and found us during the first intermission, gave me his ticket and said, 'i want to chat with your dad this period, so here's my ticket so you can find my seat.... enjoy the second period!' so off i went, found an usher and asked him where the seat was... he took me to the lower bowl and said, 'you're right down there...' i took my seat, looked a couple seat over to my left and gave the goal judge a big smile and wave! so if any of you were at the dome for game 2 in '89 and remember a kid with painted up hair in a white flames jersey banging on the glass behind patrick roy in the second period screaming, "go home you stinkin' frog!!!" ...well... that was me!!
