So ever since the show began the comics have been changed and are now geared more towards what the show writers (or the comic writers) believe will work in television format. This I think is a major reason why the setting and characters haven't really changed that much, whereas in a comic they would be more likely to change in shorter amounts of time

I don't think so, if anything they are moving more towards the comics. That's why they re-did the Governor fight. The first one was not anything like the comics and was very anti-climatic. The second one was more true to the comics with a character or 2 trading places. The second confrontation was much better.
The events after the prison are also much closer to the comics and have been the better episodes.
I am guessing that the terminus people are luring people in and are the ones that took Beth...looked like that lady had a nice big slab of meat on the grill...Beth burger anyone???
