Every staff member gets 15 paid sick days a year, plus 5 paid "family" days per year, plus 1 paid flex day per year, plus 1 paid "volunteer" day per year. And then of course there are the 15 paid vacation days per year that everyone starts out at and this increases to 20 days after 8 years.

Oh.. by the way, you can carry over your sick days from year to year if you don't use them.

Now I know this is an example of a federal employee, however I suspect there isn't much difference between her and a provincial employee.
This doesn't sound extravagant to me at all actually. I mean, sure if the "they have more staff than they need" part is accurate, then maybe that part, but everything else is somewhat standard. Lots of companies have at least 12 sick days a year, plus flex days, volunteer programs and 3 weeks holidays.

Frankly, if the government (federal or provincial) wants to compete for good employees here in Alberta they have to match what the corporations are giving.

If you do think that is ridiculous and should be stopped though, I trust you have written to your MP and mentioned the excess your wife has to confront every day? Surely the party in your signature would be happy to listen to a staunch supporter with a great idea!
