Obviously, the distance from cell towers, lack of wifi, etc. in the Malaysian flight suggests that this wasn't possible. If it was, I'm sure that some on the plane would have texted, messaged, called, etc. someone.

yeah, but in 9/11 they had time, considerable time and they didn't know they were crashing. I think if it's a sudden disaster and you're going down and realizing you're about to die, I just can't see how someone would do it.
But who knows.
