If the plane did turn west, the Indian ocean is a good guess. The Malaka strait seems to be well travelled boats and planes not to have anyone spotted anything for 4 days.

Or could it be they lost power and tried to glide back? The distance doesn't make any sense though, there's no way they glide back that far (as far as I know the glide potential is like 150km?). So getting all the way to the strait wouldn't seem possible. Also, if they did try to glide, it would have been better to just go to Vietnam.
It's totally odd.
