A heart rate monitor. Very important. You'll learn how to figure out your maximum heart rate and your minimum heart rate. That is your zone where you want your heart rate to be in. Get a monitor that continually monitors your heart rate (has a chest strap). You can take a quick glance at the watch and know if you need to step it up to raise your heart rate, or if you need to engage a little less to bring your heart rate down.
