This fiasco starts with and ends with Mike Gillis. Luongo should have got more than potential. If you blame the contract, it was given to him by Gillis. He had the option to keep one of the best goalies in the league and stand behind him. Rather than do that, he traded him for well below his value.
I won't harp on this too much, as having been a fan of a team that has done the exact same thing time and time and time and time and time and time again, I know you have to justify bad trades to be able to sleep at night.

My justification for the trade is that this is Gillis cleaning up his own mess. I hated the contract when it was signed and I hated the drama that was allowed to develop from it. In that context, I'm not unhappy with the trade as a resolution. It had to end.
