Last year the Canucks were only getting a high-mid round pick for him. This year they got a player they have coveted since this fiasco started (Matthias) and a goalie with potential for future goalie controversies.
They made out way better than they were supposed too. Not as well as you would expect on a skill swap basis, but better than they were supposed too.

The issue there is, should Gillis have signed him to that big contract? You can't blame the contract and not blame Gillis.
Secondly, do you keep Luongo a proven #1 goaltender or trade him for 'potential' and go with a goaltending tandem that have less career wins than your team has this season or Luongo has this year?
If the issue is Torts won't play him, perhaps a discussion with Tortorella needs to take place.
This fiasco starts with and ends with Mike Gillis. Luongo should have got more than potential. If you blame the contract, it was given to him by Gillis. He had the option to keep one of the best goalies in the league and stand behind him. Rather than do that, he traded him for well below his value.
I won't harp on this too much, as having been a fan of a team that has done the exact same thing time and time and time and time and time and time again, I know you have to justify bad trades to be able to sleep at night.
