We've seen 1st round picks thrown around for rentals, players expected to only play 20 games and the post-season with their new teams. Does age really matter in that regard? St. Louis still has a year left on his deal so unless he deteriorates greatly and becomes an albatross he already has more value than a rental.
Callahan's not terrible but with the money he's asking no team could really look at him as anything but a rental and that hurts his value. The Rangers upgraded hugely for this season, got a decent risk but extremely high reward player for next year and it cost them a late 1st in a bad draft. Assuming this trade happens I think it's a great move by the Rangers.
