My mom had lost her dog for around 5 hours a few weeks ago on a cold day and he ended up fine. Tell your friend to keep refreshing the city's pound picture list at:

Other places to check are on various animal rescue sites (AARCS) as well as the list and found on Kijiji. I wish your friend the best of luck, dogs are so resourceful that they can last quite some time on their own.
