AFAIK, the new CBA changed some of the rules regarding AHL transactions after the trade deadline, but from what I've found, the rule that a player must be on an AHL team's roster at the deadline in order to play in the AHL playoffs is still in place.
This requires teams to make "paper transactions", where players are demoted in the morning of the trade deadline and immediately recalled after the deadline (the Flames did this with Backlund a few years ago). Usually, the player doesn't even leave the NHL team during his brief "demotion".
I assume we'll see Smith, Ortio, and Granlund all "sent down" tomorrow morning, then recalled in time for the game (along with anyone else who's needed to ice a team tomorrow night -- assuming a bunch of trades go down).
