^Hah, that's more a problem with ice dancing as a sport than anything else, but I guess you're sort of right. I still still say it's totally reasonable to object to who did or didn't win.

The reason people get upset is because it's obvious there is a certain standard of norms, which is why you don't see, oh I don't know... Jason Statham nominated for Oscars. There's a sort of vague consensus as to who the best actors (or whatever category) in a given year, and the fine details that allow you to choose between them are of course personal, but informed by your own tastes, experience and ability to differentiate the performances. So it's only partly subjective.

When people scorn a selection that differs from theirs, what they're really saying is, "in coming to a different conclusion than me, you've effectively said that one of us is less enlightened than the other in making an assessment of these films. I assert that it is you." This is not a surprising reaction.
