I think the inspiration goes back further than that. Everything from vintage Americana, the Civil War, Punk, New Wave, David Bowie, The Smiths, the Graduate, 60s Mod, Preppy culture....it's all been influential, I think appropriating bits of the past is a big part of Hipster culture. Half the thrill is probably finding new things to rip-off.

I think the grunge look has made a bit of a come back lately, but that's probably because it fits into that "urban woodsman" look that is popular with people who like to pretend that they are one with the land by buying fancy axes and taking woodworking classes. 10 years ago these would be the guys wearing trucker hats and drinking Pabst. To me though, Grunge was always more of a slacker thing...at their root they didnt really care about being cool. Hipsters on the other hand definitely care about coolness.
