The active molecule relating to these effects of garlic is allicin which has many demonstrated beneficial in vitro effects that have more difficulty being translated in vivo. For example, ethanol (alcohol found in drinks), bleach and fire have a very high antibacterial killing rate. Ingesting them does not continue that beneficial effect. There are some promising small studies that I've come across, but nothing big enough for me to get behind.

As an aside, I would like to point out that penicillin is in fact "nature's penicillin"
