However there are other factors above winning.
The Flames may pay more to achieve the floor for the next few years with a commodity that they know is helpful for development.
The guy has a family and may love Calgary as a place to raise his kids.
He may believe the Flames are on to something. Russel's stock went way up and he resigned despite hearing rumours that he was in demand at the deadline. Stajan is Stajan I know, but the guy would still have interest on the UFA line in July and his agent would know it.
The veteran group in Calgary seems to be very optimistic going forward, which is interesting.

He's also on record saying that Alberta is much more tax advantageous for someone of his pay grade. (at the time in comparison to Montreal)
