There's a difference between those that have hit and stuck in the NHL and those that didn't.

From what I have seen of those that missed, none of them had a decent overall game and their skills while being decent were not all that and then some. Somewhat like Brendl.

When Nyquist was 19, I thought he was going to be a 1st/2nd line player in the NHL, and now he has 25 points in 35 games thus far this season with Detroit. The vision he had on the ice was just too good and the rest of his game was also above average. Gerbe also had awesome skills, but similar to Gaudreau was way too small. It's taken a while but he's finally finding his way too.

Gaudreau might have a hard time adjusting like Gerbe did, but I think his overall game is good enough and he has the skills necessary to overcome his tiny stature. Gaudreau is different from the rest of those that missed as his offensive abilities are top end, not just good. If he was 6-1, he'd be a star player already in the league.
