My wife still watches a ton of those shows like The Blacklist and CSI. I've given up on just about all of them for shows like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, True Detective and a few others. The Walking Dead may not be perfect, but it is waaay better than regular primetime, formulated TV.

What you're describing are different show formats. You prefer something in a more serial format, vs. something more episodic, that's fine, but that has nothing to do with the actual quality of the show.

Quality wise (writing, technical mumbo jumbo, etc) they're hardly different.

I'm pretty firmly of the opinion that Walking Dead isn't much better than anything on network television. It's even been said here repeatedly: "Guilty pleasure" and "An hour to turn my brain off." That's great, but plenty of network television shows match that sort of quality easily. Walking Dead is extremely formulaic, which isn't really it's fault, the comics are the exact same way. The same stories are repeated season after season.

Just my opinion though. Walking Dead isn't markedly better than a lot of stuff on network television. Perhaps it occupies an area of quality between the upper level HBO type of stuff, and the standard network television fair, but it's not much better than stuff on NBC or ABC or whatever. My wife watches CSI as well, and I just don't see much of a difference quality wise. One has zombies. Cool.
