The problem with warning shots is the animals can't always determine the direction they are fired from. Say you shoot near them, the bullet hits a tree behind them, that is the last sound they hear and they run away from it...straight at you.
Another problem is you should never shoot, unless you know where the bullet will go. ricochets happen, people could be closer than you think without knowing, etc. A gun should be an absolute last resort.
