I looked pretty hard. The one thing about the older records is they had fewer number of games as far as I could tell, which means a long point streak favours modern day.

I do know that Peter Sejna had a single-season 31 game point streak with Colorado College in 2003, perhaps people are confusing him and Kariya. Other records had stretched through multiple seasons (ending one season on a point streak and continuing it the next season) but the longest single season I could find was Sejna. However, there was no talk about that being the NCAA record but only the Colorado record which leaves some doubts.
