The winter games have always began and ended in February since the 1968 games in Grenoble, France. Prior to that, the games have only started in late January just four times. It would be a monumental shift for the winter games to go into March.
The summer games in Seoul 1988 and Sydney 2000 ended in early October and that would be appropriate for the winter games in the southern hemisphere. Those dates would be beneficial for the NHL as those players would be ready for the start of the regular season.
