February 18 General Thread
Rankings after Day 11:
By Gold Medals: 8th (4)
By Total Medals: 5th (15)
Canada heads into Day 12 looking for their first gold in a week. Both Curling teams made it to the playoffs and have a day off here as they head for the those semi-final matches. Plenty of short track today, and the beginning of the Women's Bobsleigh competition where Canada is favoured for either a gold or silver medal.
Events of Note:
[10:30 PM, 2 AM] Alpine Skiing – Women’s Giant Slalom: Three Canadians compete in the 90 person field for the Giant Slalom. Gagnon leads the team once again, and she hopes to rebound from a disappointing Olympics thus far (2 DNFs).
[11:30 PM] Freestyle Skiing – Men’s Snowboard Cross: Re-scheduled from yesterday, four Canadians will compete. Anything can happen in Snowboard Cross, so while Canada is not expected to medal, it’s…Snowboard Cross.
[2:30 AM] Short Track – Ladies’ 1000m Heats: Maltais, Drolet, and St-Gelais will compete in the 1000m. Maltais is 7th in this distance, Drolet 14th, and St-Gelais 9th.
[3:15 AM] Short Track – Men’s 500m Heats: Cournoyer, Jean and Hamelin will lead the Canadian contingent in the 500m. Hamelin looks to defend Gold in this event. Jean is 5th in the world and Cournoyer is 10th.
[3:30 AM] Biathlon – Men’s 15km Mass Start: Rescheduled twice already, the Men’s 15km Mass Start goes today. Three Canadians compete.
[3:54 AM] Short Track – Women’s 3000m Relay Final: Canada will face Korea, China, and Italy in what will be a tight relay race.
[6:45 AM, 10:30 AM] Freestyle Skiing – Men’s Ski Halfpipe: Mike Riddle and Justin Dorey lead four Canadians into the Ski Halfpipe competition. Riddle has finished 1st and 4th at the last two world championships, and Justin Dorey has been strong on the circuit (#1) despite poor showings at big events. Bowman and Margetts round out the Canadian squad.
[8:15 AM, 9:20 AM] Bobsleigh – Women’s Heat 1 & 2: Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse look to defend their gold medal from Vancouver. They have won the last two World Championships, and have been on a podium in five of eight events this year. Their toughest competition will be from the Americans. USA-1 has been more consistent this year, being 1st or 2nd in 7 of 8 world cups this year. USA-2 has been strong as well with five podium finishes, followed by three strong German teams.
