I would say you can attribute it to the change in guitarists. Ya, Frusciante played on Mothers Milk but he was 19 or something and IMO spent too much time trying to emulate Slovak's style. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is really the birth of his song writing abilities. This theory is of course discounting the Navarro album.
