February 14 General Thread
After a disappointing day at the Olympics for Canada, there will be a couple crucial games in team sports and a great medal shot for Patrick Chan in Men's Figure Skating. Slow day overall in advance of a busy Saturday.
Events of Note:
[10 PM] Curling – Men’s: #5 CAN (3-2) vs #4 NOR (3-1): Canada, currently 5th in the round-robin, has a must win game versus Norway. If Canada wins, they will pass Norway on the standings.
[3 AM] Cross-Country – Men’s 15km Classic: Alex Harvey will lead the Canadian contingent as they try once again to get on the Cross-Country podium.
[5:30 AM, 7 AM] Skeleton – Men’s Heats 1 & 2: Eric Nielsen and John Fairbairn compete for the men in the first two Skeleton runs. Neither are expected to compete for the medals, but Top 10 showings are within their reach.
[8 AM] Figure Skating – Men’s Free Skate: With a world record skate from Yuzuru Hanzu, Patrick Chan finds himself in 2nd place going into the final skate. Due to a surprising amount of below-capability performances from many of the skaters, Hanzu and Chan have a solid lead over the rest of the field; at least, much more than the usual Olympic figure skating competition.
[8:40 AM, 9:50 AM] Skeleton – Women’s Heats 3 & 4: Disappointing first day in the event, and Canada will be unable to medal here. Sarah Reid will see if she can push into the top 5, and Melissa Hollingsworth will attempt to make the Top 10.
[10 AM] Ice Hockey – Men’s: CAN (1-0) vs AUT (0-1). Canada won their first game versus Norway and should easily defeat the Austrian team as well (but this is CP, you all know that).
Other Events:
Freestyle Skiing - Ladies’ Aerials
Ski Jumping - Men’s Large Hill Individual Qualification Round
Alpine Skiing – Men’s Super Combined Downhill
Biathlon – Women’s 15km Individual
