I wouldn't even bother debating them on the subject. Its just like the awkward pauses during coffee with my old man when he goes on some rant or another, I just calmly sip my coffee, check out the cute girl in the mini skirt and they eventually get the hint and move on.

You give people power when you debate them on something that they're never going to change their mind on.

In terms of the kid, I'm not sure I'm crazy about him letting his dad know by text. IF they were somewhat close, its almost as bad as dumping a girl by mail. If they weren't well they were still close enough that there was communication happening, he could have made the effort to do it verbally.
