Wow, that was incredible. They were able to accomplish in an hour long episode what other great crime movies like Heat, Collateral, or Narc (a hidden gem) took hours to accomplish. It really does remind of the best of Michael Mann though, especially the way it's shot. Only four episodes to go, and they still have a ton to fill in, including why these detectives believe Cohle is involved somehow.
My only query is on the case itself though, and would they involve a whole team of homicide investigators to solve it. Really all they know for sure is this guy killed one, maybe two prostitutes, but haven't confirmed that he's involved in anything else (expect perhaps the disappearance of that child). So while I assume the investigation itself mirrors what you'd find in real life, would that much attention be taken for this type of case?
Oh and I loved Cohle's throwaway line about their needing to be a better system for the evidence room if he can switch out flour with cocaine that easily. Great stuff.
