Maybe look it up. As an example Hanowski was signed to a NHL contract last season and seems to have used up a year of his contract although playing only 5 games.
I think if he had gone to the AHL, he could have played on the try out contract.

They are allowed a one game PTO contract in an emergency, say for a goalie but it's a non paying contract.
