At first I questioned that as well, but then I recalled reading the books regarding balsa wood rafts and how they are capable of drifting from SA to the Pacific isles. Apparently fish are also quite readily available in those waters with very little effort required to catch.
There are some definite holes in this story, specifically, the extreme time frame he allegedly spent drifting.....should be interesting once they start coming to light.
