Happened again in '91 with Costner beating his work on Goodfellas, his second best movie (and also in the top 5 IMO).

I don't doubt he will win eventually... Possibley next year for his new film "The Departed".. But its a shame that when he does win, it will likely be for a film that doesn't even come close to the level of either Raging Bull or Goodfellas as a "well we need to give him one.. might as well be now" gesture.

I'm actually surprised they didn't do that for either the Aviator or Gangs of New York as both were in particularily weak years.

I hate the Oscars. The only awards anyone ever goes out on a limb and make ballsy picks for are the screenplay ones and occasionally the supporting actor categories.
My guess is that the Academy will never give Scorcesse an award for directing but they will eventually give a Life Time Achievement Award, which he would defenitely deserve.
