I believe VLC for iOS is only a video streamer. So no local file support. Which means if you have a network/internet location your fine, but if your on an airplane your hooped.
If you need local stored movie playback AVPlayer is your best bet outside of converting to MP4 via Handbrake. However, in the case you have WMV files I have found AVPlayer to suck. I have some old movies (When I first started ripping movies in early 2000, and thought WMV was awesome) and I ended up converting to MP4 for all WMV (Which is a garbage format now IMO)
