I don't want to look as though I have hijacked this thread but a few quick answers to questions asked above.
My preference would be for people to stop the excessive breeding that currently occurs. There are way too many horses and not enough homes. You do the math.
Firstly, there is no such thing as humane slaughter. Even Temple Grandin designed slaughter houses. Animals can smell blood and can sense fear. Many animals are not stunned correctly before they are hoisted by their hind legs to have their throat's cut. Their heart's have to be beating when their throats are cut so that they bleed out properly. I have this same conversation many times over and not one (yes, not one) person thought animals were slaughtered in this manner. They seem to think they walk happily into the abattoir and somehow end up happily packaged as meat at the other end.
I am a lifelong horsey girl. Horses have been my passion for over 50 years. They are the noblest of animals; they have stood alongside mankind; toiled with them; carried them across continents; marched with them into war; given joy and companionship. That should exempt the horse from being viewed as food.
I wish no animals were ever subjected to the slaughter house. I am vegan.
