I'm not sure why Cammaller is good for our progression. I see an underperforming, undersized sniper who plays a position we have depth at, who asked for a trade in the summer, and who can probably get us a decent return at the deadline.

How much you pay a player is always relevant. Just because we have cap space now doesn't mean we won't be kicking ourselves in 3 years if we signed some plug UFA like a Boyd Gordon to a 3.75/year AAV contract (sorry for bringing up the Oilers again)
I think its important to note that talent without direction withers and we've got a very good role model in that regard.

I dont think its crucial that we keep Cammalleri, but I think it would be helpful.

You are right about the money, it sets precedent and agents will use it. I guess I was thinking about it as a one-off incident, but there really is no such thing.

Even though we have depth at that position organizationally, it isnt all NHL depth and there are no guarantees.

Not on a long term contract, but on a 1 year contract, maybe. I could live with keeping him around for one more year, just to have that 1st line winger helping to teach the young guns how to be a 1st liner, and helping the team reach the cap floor.
Cammalleri isnt taking that risk. Calgary are not going to be competitive at any point during the rest of his career. If he stays, he stays for cash and the promise of being moved later to a contender.

The only sticking point is that the organization want to maximize his value so that when he moves on the team is better off with his leaving than they were with his presence.
