This is exactly right and in fact I might say top 4 is fine.

I just don't see a clear #1 - frankly it isn't a great year at the top end but there will be a solid piece added. Ekblad is my first choice, but it isn't by much.

I like the long-term cultural impacts of what the team is doing this season relative to the clowns up north.
For me, it isn't even about who the draft picks are, and whether there is a drop-off after 3, or whatever.

Last night was a perfect example of why winning - or trying to win - is better than losing.

The Flames could have gone through the motions last night and gave it 'the old college try' and lost 4-2 or something like that. No one would have really complained - hey, it was against the champs, after all - and people would have said, well, it was entertaining and, with the
loss, we're a little closer to a good draft pick, etc.

However...

Because of efforts like that: look at the progress Backlund is making; look at the progress Brodie is making; look at what that game does for Monahan and Colborne and Jones and Galiardi and Russell and Ramo; look at the progress that Bouma is making.

Games like that make all of the young guys better players.

And that is infinitely more valuable to the Flames than losing in order to move up one or two draft positions.
