His issue has always been ability to show up consistently on a score sheet as he is simply not built to be a 3rd line gritty centre. Scoring is the only way to be considered a 2nd line centre.

Well, first of all, your consistent position is that he isn't even an NHL player. I hope you now recognize how ridiculous that is.
As to "Scoring is the only way to be considered a 2nd line centre", the Flames as a team don't score, sitting second last in the league in goals per game.
In 05/06 they sat in a similar position. Langkow was their top scoring centre with 59 points.
Since Backlund got put permanently on a top line (28 games) he has 16 points. Pro rated that's a 50 points season.
