I'd say very few picks outside of consensus #1 overalls are no brainers. If you're gonna credit or blame scouting then you have to do it for every year.

In the case of Monahan it seemed a no brainer to us but lots of people didn't have him in their top 6.
In the Flyers behind the scenes video you can see they move Monahan down below a bunch of defensemen.
Future Considerations had him 8th. Nurse and Nichushkin ahead.
ISS had him 9th. Zadorov, Nurse and Nichushkin ahead.
Redline actually was very close to several of our picks. They had Monahan at #6 ahead of Lindholm/Nurse but behind Nichushkin, and also Poirier at #21 and Klimchuk at #27.

In a way I do agree with you that it was a no brainer to the Flames specifically but I don't think that means the scouts and GM should get no credit. It was a high pick in a good year that would've been hard to screw up but they made a good decision with Monahan. How brutal would it have been to take Nurse over him for example?
