The MLS is coming along nicely as a league, and I'd love to see a team here. The problem is, Calgary is a graveyard for professional soccer, and even the talk last year of a NASL team starting up here (an important first step) is doomed from the start because of inadequate venues. Playing at McMahon would kill it before it begins.
There are a lot of soccer fans in Calgary, but the culture of professional soccer in this city is horrible. Failure after failure. Unfortunately, if I'm the MLS, I wouldn't want to be anywhere close to Calgary until it can prove it can support a small professional (NASL) club first. I could see the Flames eventually getting involved in soccer as part of their sports business, but I think that we're still a long way off.
That's still slightly on-topic, right? An imaginary team that might play in a stadium that might be attached to an arena that might be getting built someday?
