While not a board game, it isn't too far off:

I've been playing lots of MTG lately and recently constructed a cube* to allow me to draft with some friends that don't want to buy cards of their own. It's been a lot of fun so far and I've been able to hook a friend or two into joining the hobby more seriously. It's great because I was able to build the cube for next to no cost; it's filled entirely with commons and uncommons that I already owned.

*a cube is a set of 360 or more cards built with the intention of drafting. You can put whatever you want in a cube and each cube generally follows a theme. Some are "powered" and contain only the best cards from the entire history of MTG.
