Holy crap, what a thread...
Anyway, my thoughts on extending Cammy... it all comes down to what we could sign him for, and what we might get in return for him. If we could get a first AND a prospect, I think that would be huge, but I dunno if he goes for that. If we just get a late first, it might be better to keep him.
He's not only a great player, but he appears to be a great teammate. He has a good work ethic. Things like that are important for a young growing team. People forget that in a rebuild you need some mid age players and some vets too. You need people to teach the kids, and round out the experience. I actually think that might be one of Edmonton's problems right now. (Though, there are many of course) But all great young teams always have a few older guys showing them the ropes, keeping them on track. Making sure they don't get too high, or too low. Cammy seems like the perfect guy for that, plus he's a pretty decent player on top of that. And then there is the talk about the cap floor. Really, that doesn't enter into my reasoning too much, but with all things being equal, wouldn't you want to spend the money on a guy you really like and is a good fit for the team, than someone new who might just be an overpay?
All that said, don't get me wrong, we shouldn't keep him at all costs. If he wants a big contract or a no move clause, then yeah, we try and get something for him. And that's what I'm saying, it's a hard opinion to fairly nail down because you really have to weigh both sides and we don't have access to that right now. It's really a 50/50 option in my eyes. Cost vs return.
A quick aside to the Fucale discussion. Yeah, it would be nice to have him in our system. But I wouldn't crown him with anything yet. Even the best junior goalies are really only guaranteed to be a capable backup. Picking goalies is such a crap shoot. And not only that, they take so long to develop. And hey, Saros seems to have outplayed him in the WJC's anyway. (Saros plug cause I picked him up in the CPHL draft last summer, whoot!) So while yeah, having Fucale would be nice, having Cammy is nice too. I can't really call it a bad trade. And it may actually end up being a good one.
