The problem is that being a PBP requires a totally different skill-set than what Rob excels at. Being a PBP announcer is just not a role that encourages long verbose discourse. When on the FAN, he can slow down and is really in his element. Rob Kerr, on the Fan giving his opinion, is still really hard to beat IMO.
While not his perfect position either, if he was at least the Color guy on Sportsnet, he would be much more successful. It would put him in a position where he can at least have more time to dissect the game and add insight.

I think that would be a great way to use him moving forward if the broadcast didn't want to move on from Simmer.
Have Kerr host the intermission/introductions and then join Millions and Simmer in the broadcast booth as the sort of substance colour guy. Simmer chimes in from the player perspective, says something about getting pucks and bodies to the net, and then Kerr follows that up with the shot-count or the historical shot differential, whatever, between the two teams. Period ends, cut to commercial, send it back to the guys back east, queue up the canned intermission segment like rookie reporter or whatever zany thing Kerr has worked up, cut to commercial, and then back to the guys up in the booth.
That's a great format, in my opinion.
