Lose cammy for free or sign him to a contract and trade him in the offseason or next season for a pick In what is a better draft. That's a no brainer.
If calgary cannot replace cammy with someone as good as or better it's smarter to keep him and wait for a better time to trade him. If no one is interested right now and the asset has an all time low value the smart man keeps an asset till it is worth more or until it can be replaced. Nothing is lost by keeping cammy if a market doesn't exist. Calgary is going to struggle to reach the cap floor next year so signing cammy to a 3 year deal and then moving him and retaining salary next year just works.

But if no market exists for Cammy and he doesn't want to re-sign what does Burke do? Let him walk for nothing? Just because a market may not exist for Cammy doesn't mean he will sign here. I believe he would walk for nothing at season's end. Unlikely scenario but it takes the buy in from the player to sign with the team which is not a foregone conclusion.
