The word would be exclusively in the domain of racist scumbags had it not been for black people successfully getting it back into our vernacular. I would never use it in any form had it not become part of our language, a part of our language that exists outside of the racist scumbag dictionary.
I do not think at this point the word 'should' be used exclusively by black people, it seems to be general use, yet we hesitate to use it (I personally feel it should not be used at all). It certainly is not my choice of words, but it is strange that one group can use it and another cannot.
If Jews used the word 'kike' to refer to each other, it would result in the same thing, widespread use and a desensitization of the original meaning.
