No it wasn't. Phaneuf was 24, Stajan,
StempniakHagman and White were all older. Unless every trade can be classified as rebuilding rarely do they involve giving up the youngest and best player in the deal.
Trading a future HHOF fame defenseman in the later part of his prime for 2 first round picks, a 2nd round pick, a 20 year old defenseman and a 23 year old winger is a rebuilding move. Regardless of circumstance.
Trading a long time veteran and heart and soul player for a 1st round draft pick and 2 former first round draft picks aged 21 and 20 is a rebuilding move.
Trading a long time team captain (and Lupul just to show how incompetent they are) for a younger defenseman and draft pick while changing the leadership of the team is a rebuilding move.
Doing all 3 of those moves in a single year means it's a rebuild. The Oilers started rebuilding in 2006.
